May  2003 Warriors News Letter

Super Job goes to Presidential Sports Award recipients:

Robert L. Cox – Anthonette Ward- Sharon Paul – Brandon Paul & Justin Paul.  These Taekwondoist recorded their TKD activities  from January thru April.  They will receive two certificates and a the presidential patch in the near future.

ITA Patch  is being issued  during the test cycles, which replaces the AIKIA/WMA patch.  We are no longer affiliated with that organization.  As on November 2002, we are members of GM Pellegrini’s Independent Tae Kwon Do Association (ITA).  The ITA patch goes on the left side of your dobok. So please remove the old patch and only wear the ones that are authorized.  I have a hand out for  patches that you are authorized to wear on your dobok.

FORMS or the Korean word Poomse  are  part of our TKD curriculum.  You must know these to get promoted into each rank. Additionally you will have to perform all eight for your  Black Belt test as well as the first Black Belt form Koryo.  Several parents and students have requested info on where to get videos.  One of the best sources for TKD material is a company called Turtle Press  (turtlepress.com  or 1-800-778-8785).  The following is the info:

Taegeuk Poomse DVD- P/N: DVD-TKD31  $39.95  (this is the 8 color belt forms)
Taegeuk Poomse  VHS-P/N:  TKD31   $29.95
Black Belt Poomse DVD- P/N:  DVD-TKD46  $39.95  (all Black Belt forms)

Request their catalog...they have some great books and other training videos for all levels of students!!!!

June class schedule will remain the same at the YMCA and Triple T’s.  However there will be no classes at Triple T’s on Monday 30 June. (Picnic sat. 14 June)

Karate College is 27~29 June, I am not attending this year but don’t let that keep you from attending!!!

July:  Class schedule will remain the same at the YMCA and Triple T’s except for 1 thru 4 July.  No classes on those days.

August:  Class schedule will remain the same at the YMCA and Triple T’s.  For Tae Kwon Do & Combat Hapkido students, I plan to attend a Combat Hapkido Seminar on 9 Aug. at Master Williford in High Point NC.  Ages 12 and up may participate.  Last year the fee for the 8 hr seminar was $80.00.

Testing  will take place sometime in September.  This should give the new students ample time to learn their 9th Gup (Yellow Belt) requirements.  If you tested this past cycle and are ready in Sept., it will reward those that stay and train through the summer months.

Instructors Corner:  It seems we always lose a few students during the summer months and some don’t return in September.  This is a typical pattern for all martial arts schools.  I have had only one student ever say, ”ha.. Mr. Spencer, I am  not coming back”.  This student was one of those who only enjoyed winning and could not accept defeat.  She lost in a tournament and didn’t get the concept of training harder!   It was  sad, because she had reached Blue Belt.  I had another young man, a Green Belt that lost in a tournament and never came back. He had the same defeatist mentality. What makes a good martial artist in the ring and in life,   you always get up when you get knocked down!

As you see from the awards on promotional night, there are very few upper belts.  It maybe TKD gets boring or too repetitious for some. (Repetition is  the road to mastery.)  There are so many other school activities and other sports that may interest your child/you more.  Whatever the case maybe if you don’t return, I  want to express my sincere appreciation for being part of your child’s/yours growth the past few months.

For those that remain thru the summer and continue in the fall, I hope you will continue to train hard in the dojang as well at home.  The two hours per week is very little time to spend sharpening your martial arts skills.  I know the demon of hot weather discourages some, but try to find a friend to train with and cross train in other activities to increase your cardio condition.  There are plenty of runs-bike races in the Tidewater area.  They will tremendously enhance your TKD training

 Sincerely,  Wayne Spencer
